What is within an hour

The inlet

Rain, second growth, a harbour with working boats, and a long beach that is empty for nine months of the year.

Tofino sits at the end of a road that goes nowhere else. That one fact shapes everything about being here: traffic arrives and leaves in the same direction, the weather comes off the open water without anything to slow it, and the town is busy in July and quiet by the middle of September.

The pine avenue

The planting crews put in the avenue that runs from the bend below the house towards the headland. It was meant as a windbreak for the nursery beds. The nursery is gone and the avenue is now the most photographed thing within walking distance, which would have surprised the people who planted it.

The rope walk

Behind the house two firs carry a rope walk at about four metres. It was put up for the planters' children in 1971 and rebuilt in 2019 with proper fittings and an inspection record. Children use it constantly. Adults use it once, quietly, when they think nobody is looking.
